Name: Milliarde “Milly” Baelheit
Aliases: Starbreaker
Canon: Baten Kaitos
Role: SUPERHERO
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Appearance:
is this her everyday appearance or her superhero getup? you decide
Origin story: Milly was born an only child to Julius and Madelynne Baelheit, two ambitious scientists who may or may not have been working with less than savory organizations. When she was about seven years old, one of her father’s MORALLY QUESTIONABLE EXPERIMENTS went horribly wrong, killing Madelynne and gravely injuring little Milly in the process. In a desperate attempt to save his daughter’s life, Dr. Baelheit reconstructed the damaged parts of her body with cybernetic replacements, transforming her into a TRAGIC CYBORG. As she has grown, she has periodically required replacements and upgrades to her cyborg body parts, and it being her father’s area of expertise, he performs all the required maintenance. As a result, Milly has often felt like she was part daughter, part experiment, and it has put a strain on her otherwise positive and loving relationship with her father. This in combination with Baelheit’s increasing emotional distance since Madelynn’s death and what Milly perceives as his overprotectiveness, always keeping her sheltered, led to a rift between the two of them, coming to a head with a particularly vehement disagreement between them. Milly, always feeling conflicted about her cyborg parts but at the same time wanting to get out and do something with her powers, had wanted to register and join the West Coast Trailblazers, which Baelheit had strictly forbidden. This culminated in a bit of a falling out, with Milly leaving home to strike out as a superhero on her own, although she still maintains a shaky relationship with her father as she is dependent on him to maintain her cybernetic body parts.
Aside from her TRAGIC CYBORG ADOLESCENCE, Milly has led a generally sheltered and privileged life. Despite her ever-constant yearning for adventure and action, her father kept her as out of the world as possible when she was growing up, filling her time up with private school and extracurricular activities to keep her busy. Milly is unaware of most of the details of her parents’ work before the accident, particularly the vicious nature of Baelheit’s experiments and that they worked for TRIDENT; she only knows that the legal status of her own cybernetic body parts is iffy at best, and that it would be dangerous for anyone to know.
Personality: Milly is fairly similar to her canon counterpart, although a little bit older and wiser for the kind of relationship she’s been able to have with her father in this AU. She grew up the sheltered wealthy girl -- pushy, bossy, and a little self-righteous -- but she’s had a little time to grow out of some of her adolescent immaturity, and she isn’t quite so sheltered now that she’s broken out into the superhero world. She still has a tendency to place a lot of weight on first impressions, and she can be a little judgmental, but a little time spent out from underneath her father’s thumb has certainly broadened her perspective some.
Milly is tougher than she looks, and extraordinarily tenacious; however, her feelings are far from bulletproof, and she has more than a few sore spots (the fact that she’s a cyborg not the least among them), which she tends to try and keep a secret rather than wearing them on her sleeve. Still, she is not a social hermit by any stretch of the imagination. She is almost aggressively social and delights in making friends, and her own fairly solid moral code often leads her to (at least trying to) protect those she perceives to be “the weak and abused”. Bullies and people picking on the innocent are Milly’s least favorite kind of people, and she puts it on herself to take care of them, as she steadfastly believes that she is one of The Strong and that this is basically her job. She has a tendency to put herself on a moral high horse when it comes to that sort of thing, and she hates being talked over or ignored when she’s in Self-Righteous Hero Mode.
Milly is the opposite of outdoorsy, and she’s not a fan of muckin’ it. Despite that, she is a pretty big fan of physical activity, whether it’s dance, sports, or just plain heroic butt-kicking. She’s a pretty intelligent young lady and while she might see the value of diplomacy, she has absolutely zero trouble making peace with the fact that sometimes violence is totally the answer. She is insatiably adventurous and stubbornly curious, and she’s pretty self-confident to boot. The unfortunate flip-side to that is that she’s rather proud; she considers herself capable and pretty talented, so when she doesn’t live up to her own expectations, she gets frustrated and angry, and the more frustrated she gets, the more she wants to put her foot through several doors. She’s pretty decent at maintaining a straight face and lying if need be, but when she gets emotional, the floodgates tend to open and she loses her cool.
Milly’s main ISSUE is her TRAGIC CYBORG ANGST. Although she happily leads her life as though she is a normal girl, she knows she harbors a DARK SECRET and sometimes, it really gets to her. Most of her body is cyborg parts at this point, and while she tries to ignore it for the most part, the maintenance and the occasional breakdown are a constant reminder that she is not, in fact, a Real Girl anymore. She’s got a bit of a Pinocchio complex about it, and she feels somewhat estranged from her peers not only because of her cyborg status (which definitely makes her feel like a Freak), but because she grew up largely isolated from her social group thanks to her father. Making friends was always sort of difficult with a father as overprotective as Baelheit. She does the hero gig because she believes in it, but there’s no doubt that she hopes she can find some sense of belonging in the superhero community, and that by being a hero she can make up for the fact that she is a cyborg.
Differences from canon: The main differences from canon Milly are the setting change and the notable absence of Sagi, Guillo, et al., as well as the “Milly is actually spying for her dad” plotline that goes along with them. With the change of setting, she obviously has no wings of the heart, but rather the power of flight, and the progression of her relationship with her father is substantially different for the absence of the other major characters in her canon. She is also slightly older, and Baelheit is also not dead.
Power level: B
Powers: Milly’s main powers are flight, super strength, and super durability. Flight is the only power she was actually born with; her super strength & durability are largely a byproduct of her cybernetic enhancements. She’s basically a Flying Brick -- she can pack a serious punch, but also take one -- except also a cyborg. Although she is still essentially human, most of her body is composed of cybernetic replacements interwoven with her own flesh. It isn’t apparent just from looking at her, however; on the surface, she appears to be a perfectly normal human being, and you wouldn’t know she’s a cyborg just by looking at her (although she is substantially heavier than a completely organic girl of her size). She keeps the fact that she’s a cyborg a secret, owing to the fact that the origins of her cybernetic replacements are pretty illegal and suspect, and instead presents herself as a 100% organic superhero.
Team affiliation: None at the moment! She is soloin’ it up, but she is extremely keen on being in a Team so that she can feel like she Belongs.
First person sample: Milly explains the Cloudgulls and the Blooderflies to Karkat.
Prose sample: Milly accidentally blackflirts with Vriska.
